Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

Sara Donati · 2000 · global

Sara Donati's 2000 sequel. In the hard winter of 1794 Elizabeth gives birth to twins at Paradise, and word comes that Nathaniel and his father are held in Montreal and may hang as spies. She sets out north through the snow with infants to free them - and the rescue ends with the whole family on a ship bound for Scotland and a family feud none of them asked for.

  1. 1
    Paradise

In the middle of a blizzard in the worst winter Paradise can remember, Elizabeth bears twins - and learns almost at once that her husband and his father have been taken in Canada and are in danger of hanging.

  2. 2
    Montreal

She bundles the infants north through the snow and over the frozen waterways to Montreal, and sets about getting two men out of a garrison gaol by a combination of nerve, invention and money she does not have.

  3. 3
    Quebec

The escape works, and then goes wrong: the family is separated and carried downriver to Quebec, where a ship is waiting and the party finds itself put aboard for the Atlantic whether it consents or not.

  4. 4
    Annandale

The crossing ends in the Scottish borders at Carryckcastle in Annandale, where an old earl has arranged their passage all along - and a claim of blood and inheritance falls on people who came only to fetch their children.
