Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

Arthur Penn · 1967 · road

Arthur Penn's 1967 film. A bored small-town waitress in west Texas watches a stranger trying to steal her mother's car and goes with him. What starts as showing off with an unloaded pistol turns into bank robbery, a gang, a running series of shootouts across the Midwest, and a car on a Louisiana back road in May 1934.

  1. 1
    West Dallas

Bonnie Parker leans out of a bedroom window in west Texas and finds Clyde Barrow at her mother's car - and within an hour has watched him rob a store, ridden away in a stolen vehicle, and decided this is preferable to waitressing.

  2. 2
    Joplin

The gang holes up in a rented garage apartment in Joplin, Missouri, with Clyde's brother Buck and his appalled wife Blanche - until the local police call round about the noise and two of them are killed on the driveway.

  3. 3
    Platte City

At a motor court outside Platte City the law arrives with an armoured car, and the gang shoots its way out - Buck fatally hit, Blanche blinded by glass, and the whole enterprise coming apart in a single night.

  4. 4
    Dexter

Cornered in a park near Dexter, Iowa, they are shot to pieces in the open. Buck dies there and Blanche is taken, and Bonnie and Clyde crawl out wounded with only C.W. Moss left to drive them.

  5. 5
    Gibsland

On a back road near Gibsland in Bienville Parish, Louisiana, they stop for a man changing a tyre - and the posse in the trees opens fire, and keeps firing long after there is any need to.
