Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

James Mangold · 2007 · overland

James Mangold's 2007 western. A drought-ruined Arizona rancher about to lose his land takes two hundred dollars to help escort a captured outlaw to the train that will carry him to the territorial prison at Yuma. The gang rides after them the whole way, and by the time they reach the station the money has stopped being the reason he is still there.

  1. 1
    Bisbee

Dan Evans is three years behind on his water and about to be burned off his land near Bisbee, and his sons think very little of him - so when the outlaw Ben Wade is taken in town, he volunteers for the escort and the fee.

  2. 2
    Contention City

The party works north through Apache country and a railway tunnel crew, losing men to Wade's talk as much as to his gang - and reaches Contention City to wait out the hours in a hotel room above a street filling with hired guns.

  3. 3
    Yuma

The 3:10 runs west to the territorial prison at Yuma, and the walk to the station is two hundred yards of open ground against twenty men - which by then Evans is making for reasons that have nothing to do with the money.
